It’s not often that people find themselves at the centre of praise from Roy Keane, but Pep Guardiola was an exception to the rule on Wednesday evening.
Following Manchester City’s 4-1 demolition of Borussia Monchengladbach in their Champions League opener, the clear impact of Guardiola on his new side in such a short space of time was highlighted yet again.
Speaking on ITV’s highlights programme on Wednesday night, former Manchester United midfielder Keane said: ‘Mourinho reckons he’s the special one, to me this guy (Guardiola) is.’
Roy Keane was quick to praise Pep Guardiola and labelled him the ‘special one’ – not Mourinho
Manchester City battered Borussia Monchengladbach 4-1 in their Champions League opener
‘I think what was important when he first went in there, the decision to get rid of two or three really important characters from Man City – Hart, Toure – he made the decision, ‘you’re not for me’.
‘He says he’s a challenging coach and he doesn’t look like he’s messing about.
They’re playing with a lot of confidence, he’s rotating the squad, the players are playing with a lot of confidence after a decent start. I wouldn’t like to mess with him.’

Keane feels that Guardiola has injected his players with confidence and belief in their abilities
Alongside Keane on the sofa was Lee Dixon, and the former Arsenal defender saved particular criticism for Jan Vertonghen, for his part in Monaco’s opener.
‘He’s got the players’ attention. 4-0 win, playing a certain way, next game he’ll probably change it,’ said Dixon. ‘He’s always thinking about new ideas.
‘I think it’s in Man City’s DNA over a number of years that they take their foot off the gas and relax a bit. It won’t happen under this manager.’
